Custom Wigs For Cancer Patients

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY EDUCATION: Depending on the type of medication used, in case of chemotherapy treatment, hairloss usually starts after the 2nd treatment. Whether due to chemotherapy, surgery, female pattern balding or alopecia, hairloss can happen to anyone, at any age. Realizing that this deeply personal experience can often be emotionally painful, an in-home wig consultant provides custom wig styling and services to individuals in the privacy of their own home.  Women's issues has become a very important matter to Elizabeth.  She ofters herself as an in-home wig consultant per request.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY EDUCATION:  Fran has alopecia (complete baldness)

MAYO CLINIC: According to Gabriel Sciallis, M.D., a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic ,there are several causes of hairloss:
Most people shed 50 to 100 hairs a day. Like your nails and skin, your hair goes through a cycle of growth and rest. Gradual thinning is a normal part of aging. However (alopecia) may lead to baldness when the rate of shedding exceeds the rate of regrowth , when new hair is thinner than the hair shed or when hair comes out in patches.

The most common type of hairloss is androgenetic alopecia (AGA), or pattern baldness. It's usually permanent and attributed to heredity.

Another type of hairloss, known as senescent alopecia, is the gradual thinning of hair with age that's usually not apparent until after age 50. This type of hairloss isn't considered hereditary.

Toxic Hairloss can occur when you undergo chemotherapy or ingest poison. Chemicals that destroy cancer cells also kill hair cells. Once chemotherapy is completed, your hair usually grows back.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease, and its cause is unknown. The hairloss occurs in small, rough, smooth patches and , in rare cases, can result in total baldness.

Hair shaft disorders, or injured hairs, are caused by improper perms or coloring, over styling, straightening, curling and excessive brushing.

Telogen effluvium is temporary hairloss due to change in your normal hair cycle. This type of hairloss may occur following pregnancy, oral contraceptive usage or physically stressful situations, such as high fevers, sudden excessive weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, surgery and metabolic disturbances. This type of hairloss is sudden with handfuls of hair on your comb, in the shower or in your hand after gentle tugging. Your hair grows back once the condition corrects itself.

Infections, such as scalp ringworm and syphilis, can cause hair loss.

A psychological disorder, such as compulsive hair pulling( trichotillomania), can result in unusual patterns of hairloss.

Other disorders that may cause hairloss are diabetes, lupus, collagen vascular disease, thyroid disorders, excess hormones, and severe kidney and liver diseases.

Q: Can my hairloss be related to my diet?

A: Yes. A common reason for excessive hairloss among women is too much dieting. Hairloss can occur when people consume too few calories or have an inadequate intake of protein, iron, or zinc. The risk of hairloss is one of the many reasons why you should lose weight gradually with sensible, balanced eating. Although hairloss among men can be caused by hereditary male-pattern baldness, a variety of physical problems can also result in hairloss for both sexes. These problems should be discussed with your physician. Certain illnesses, fungal infections and even side effects from some medications can cause hairloss. Some people also experience hairloss two to three months after their body undergoes a period of major stress, like surgery, prolonged fever, or childbirth

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY EDUCATION:  An alternative hair consultant is a cosmetologist specializing in hair replacement. This is an industry that helps clients feel good about themselves and the work atmosphere consists of dedicated professionals that are committed to excellence.

As a professional, Elizabeth believes it is important to assure honesty, integrity, and personal growth. In a service industry it is important to strive to exceed clients' expectations, while remaining teachable and open to new concepts and industry trends. Elizabeth has a lot of great ideas and want to put them to use.

Elizabeth is a special hair consultant that has been carefully trained to meet many varied specialized needs associated with those undergoing treatment for chemotherapy, alopecia areaota, and genetic hormonal imbalance that causes hairloss.

Elizabeth says the rewards in working with seriously ill patients are abundant, especially when helping someone look and feel better about themselves. This can be a difficult time for the patient that is experiencing the sometimes-traumatic side effects of chemotherapy or burn treatments. They welcome all the encouragement and beauty suggestions that are offered.

The greatest thing about " My Natural Designs" is not just doing the beautiful styles

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY EDUCATION:  When working with a client and taking her to a place where she feels so much better only transfers those feelings to someone else. It's an amazing gift that cosmetologists have to offer their clients.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY EDUCATION:  My goals are to continually help and educate clients.

Here is a description of the different types of cranial prosthetics-wigs & hairpieces

Machine-Made-wigs totally made by machine. Weft style cap can be found in synthetic, human, and natural scalp wig-wear.

Hand-Made-offers a solid, yet breathable mesh cap with all the hair tied by hand and available in synthetic and human hair with a natural scalp look.

Monofilament- or natural scalp, a thin breathable material that provides a natural looking scalp and part located in the top of the wig or pieces. Makes wigs and hairpieces a natural believable look, just like growing from the scalp.

Synthetic- a man made fiber much like the appearance and feel of your own hair, but none of the work. Memory helps regain it's natural shape. Takes about eight hours to dry and cannot be styled with hot tools but can be professionally steamed for restyling.

Human-Hair-just like yours. Can be colored, hi-lifted, permed, curled etc. Much more care than synthetic wigs, but are recommended for clients who prefer a longer styled wig.

While working with people in need of emotional care,my strengths are in the positive attitude and a genuine concern for helping people. This is a very important quality when working with depressed people. My education in the social sciences has also given me a strong foundation in this area.  I believe that I can touch the lives of many people by reshaping their lives and making them feel a sense of self worth. This positive attitude is what is important to me.

I have a primary concern for education and want to educate and help patients with thinning and various hairloss problems.  My goals are to boost the self-esteem and overall well being of chemotheapy and hairloss patients by creating a network of resources.
